Project Spotlight:

Following the major hailstorm activity in Berthoud, this property required a complete restoration strategy to address significant exterior damage. By managing both a high-performance roof replacement and a full vinyl siding installation, we provided a streamlined, single-source solution to restore the home’s protection and curb appeal.

Back in May 2025, a series of nasty hailstorms tore through Berthoud, leaving a trail of dented siding and bruised roofs in its wake. This particular home took a direct hit, and the damage was exactly what we expect from Colorado’s “Hail Alley.” The old shingles were pitted and losing granules, showing clear signs of hail damage and the siding was cracked and failing. We stepped in to handle the full restoration, moving the project from a storm-damaged headache to a fresh, high-performance exterior.

Phase 1: Upgrading to IKO Nordic Impact Resistance

For the roof, we didn’t want to just put back what was there before. Given how hard Berthoud got hit in May, we recommended a significant upgrade in durability. As is our standard practice, we stripped the roof down to the wood decking to check for any hidden soft spots or spaced roof decking before building it back up.

The Setup:

  • The Shingle: We installed IKO Nordic shingles in Granite Black. These are heavyweight, Class 4 impact-resistant shingles. They are specifically engineered to handle the kind of hail that caused this mess in the first place.
  • Leak Defense: We didn’t cut corners on the underlayment. We used a high-quality synthetic felt and added an Ice & Water Shield in all the valleys. In our climate, those valleys are the most vulnerable spots for ice dams and moisture backup.
  • The Details: We swapped out the old vents for five 750 Turtle Vents and replaced all the pipe boots. Everything was finished off with matching IKO Hip & Ridge caps and a clean white drip edge for a sharp, watertight seal.

Phase 2: A Fresh Look with Alside Vinyl Siding

The siding was the next big piece of the puzzle. The goal here was to get rid of the damaged siding and replace them with something low-maintenance that would also help with the home’s energy bills.

Custom Exteriors replaced both the vinyl siding and the roof on this Berthoud home.

The Siding Specs:

  • Material: We went with Alside D5 vinyl siding. It’s tough, looks great, and won’t need the constant painting that wood siding requires.
  • Energy Boost: Before the siding went up, we wrapped the house in high-quality house wrap and added 1/4″ foil-backed fanfold insulation. This creates a thermal envelope around the home, keeping it warmer in the winter and cooler during those hot Berthoud summers.
  • Color Scheme: The homeowners went with a really clean, modern look. We used Cape Cod Grey for the main body and the soffits, which looks fantastic against the White trim and fascia.
  • Finishing Touches: We installed new white aluminum fascia on all the eaves and rakes. We also took the opportunity to remove and seal up the old gable vents to streamline the ventilation and eliminate two potential points for moisture or pests to get in.
